TAXONOMY OF GORGONIANS AND BLACK CORALS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Training Objective

Introductory course on the taxonomy of gorgonians (Anthozoa, Octocorallia) and black corals (Anthozoa, Hexacorallia, Antipatharia) of the Mediterranean Sea.

Purpose

To provide participants with the basic knowledge required to identify Mediterranean species of these two groups of structuring anthozoans.

Topics Covered

  1. phylogeny and diversity of gorgonians and black corals
  2. ecological role of arborescent anthozoan forests, monitoring, and conservation
  3. distinctive taxonomic features
  4. overview of Mediterranean families, genera, and species
  5. identification from specimens and images
